Pigment Diaries: The History of Indian Yellow

Also known as: Piuri / Puree / Euxanthin / Euxanthine / Turner’s Yellow
First used: 15th century (Monghyr, Bengal); 1996 (Winsor & Newton)
Banned (in it’s original mixture): 1883 (India; United Kingdom)
Comparison: Less pure than Cadmium Yellow; more deeply coloured than Gamboge.

Indian Yellow is popular for its vivid and bright colour in sunlight; its transparency made it famous for rich glazes and vibrant washes, making it a popular pigment in the palettes of 18th century dutch artists. The oil colour variant can be found extensively in the works of the Scottish Colourists and J.M.W. Turner.

How to Mix Skin Tones in Watercolour

There are several ways to mix flesh tones in watercolour. Unfortunately, when I first started painting portraits I wasn’t aware of this fact. I thought I knew how to whip up a flesh tone using only my Jaune Brilliant No.1 and No.2, but I always found myself frustrated with the rather flat results. The Burnt Umber I used made the shadows look too dark and heavy, and adding white only made the final colour dull and lifeless. I was stuck, and I didn’t know why.

Flora Series: Everything was Blooming

Everything Was Blooming is the first in the trio of the Flora Series I created back in 2012. I loved creating this illustration – at the time, it felt like a real turning point in my drawing style. Long before this series I had always been forcibly encouraged by art teachers to drop the detail and to focus instead on ‘scaling up’. The problem was that big paintings in broad brushstrokes simply isn’t my thing.  I would love to create a large scale work, but not at the expense of the small details – and, unfortunately, A level art just couldn’t afford me the time I would have needed to create such an intricate plus-sized work.
